0.0: Start at the mouth (eastern end) of the parking lot, and cross the street toward the marsh.
0.1: Multiple junction. Turn left on signed Chochenyo Trail.
0.3: Spur trail to Bayview Trail on the left side of the trail. Continue on Chochenyo Trail as it sweeps to the right.
0.3. Junction. Continue to the right on Chochenyo Trail.
0.5: Chochenyo Trail bends to the right at a signed junction. Turn right to remain on Chochenyo Trail.
0.5: Unmarked junction. Turn left.
0.7: The trail splits at an unmarked junction. Bear left.
0.9: Near a pit toilet, the trail splits again at an unsigned junction. Bear right.
1.0: A previously encountered junction. Bear left and retrace your steps to the junction with Chochenyo and D.U.S.T. Trail.
1.3: Junction. Turn right on D.U.S.T. Trail.
2.0: D.U.S.T. Trail ends at a signed junction. Turn left onto the Alameda Creek Trail.
3.1: Junction. Take the trail to the left as it sweeps gently uphill.
3.2: Junction. Cross paved Bayview Trail and take dirt Red Hill Trail uphill.
3.6: Junction. Continue straight, uphill on Red Hill Trail.
4.0: Junction. Continue straight on Red Hill Trail.
4.1: Junction. Turn left onto multi-use Soaproot Trail.
4.4: Soaproot Trails ends at a signed junction. Turn left, then right onto paved Bayview Trail.
4.8: Near the Quarry Staging Area, cross the parking lot and turn left onto Muskrat Trail.
5.1: At some boulders defaced with graffiti, take the unsigned trail to the right downhill.
5.2: Back at the trailhead.

Getting there:
From CA 84 in Alameda County, exit Paseo Padre Parkway/Thornton Avenue (this is exit 36, the first exit after the toll plaza, traveling east). Drive north on Paseo Padre about 1 mile, then turn left onto Patterson Ranch Road. Drive about 1.5 miles more, past the entrance kiosk and Quarry Staging Area, to the trailhead at the end of the road (near the Visitor Center).
