Where do you buy your gear? We are compiling a list of people's favorite businesses, including places to buy Hiking gear, in the Bay Area. Please help us complete this list at http://ynode.com Thanks.

I subscribe to a camping blog and found this site. http://www.wenzel-camping-gear.com/blogs/2005/12/selecting-camping-tent-and-discount.html.

I have purchased a few things from this store and it seems like a pretty nice place to shop on the web.  Anyway, there is a discount code at the bottom of this blog and it is good for everything in your cart.  I'm not sure how long the code is good for though.

I checked out the site you mentioned (wnzel-camping... ) the hiking poles they have for sale ~$20 (Swiss gear) is sold at a regular price of less than $10 at Wallmart.
So judging by this single item, their prices are not that competetive.

I guess you have to purchase that Item directly from the store.  I couldn't find it at http://www.walmart.com/

Perhaps I'll check out Walmart alot more for my gear too.

I love to go to REI in Saratoga.  Wish we had one closer.  It is worth the drive because of their great selection and good prices.  REI = Recreational Equipment, Inc.

I used to go to the North Face Outlet in Berkeley, CA. Great deals, REI is fine, too, but your best deals are found in Reno, NV, of all places. If ever you pass through, Patagonia and Sierra Trading Post offer bargains, with seconds, blems, and first rate merchandise. High quality control means many undetectable defects, mostly cosmetic or unnoticable, offer a vastly lower price.

Online shopping seems pretty good, too. I got a fantastic deal on a climbing daypack from Amazon.com. Beat the local prices by almost 25%. Free shipping, then, too.

Fools to pay full prices, given the ops, locally. Bay Area is pretty bad for that!

I usually hit the army surplus stores before searching anywhere else:

Mountain View Surplus on S. Bascom (Campbell)
Stevens Creek Surplus on Stevens Creek (San Jose)

REI has members-only used gear sales.  Each store usually does one sale a month - show up early because there's a line to get in and people start hoarding the second they get in.  I got a Gregory Palisade pack for $120 (normally $289) because it had a broken clip.  I got a Big Agnes pad for $20 (normally $70 or $80) because it had been used.  I'm not kidding, if you're not a member then just go sign up and show up!

Greetings! I'd like to highly recommend Redwood Trading Post on El Camino in Redwood City. They are private/family owned since 1952 and have a great selection of gear. They also have a "rewards program". Plenty of parking in lot in back or on side street (Wilson). It think it's great to have local & privately owned businesses to support for our gear needs, hence my post. Happy Day, Georgia
