This is not a Bay Area hike, but it is a noted wildflower site, and lots of folks hike there in spring. If you are planning a trip to Pacheco State Park anytime soon, be advised that some of the trails and markers at the far south end of the park are not in very good shape. It’s still a great hike, but you will need to have confidence in you navigation skills to do the really obscure trails. Specifically, the Wiskey Flat Trail (#3), South Boundary Trail (#11), the Mountain View Trail (#12), and the Diamond Lake Trail (#13). All have fallen back to nature. Lots of wildflowers and great scenery, but the trails are mostly indiscernible, and some of the markers have rotted and fallen down. Also lots of critter burrows unseen in the high grass to step in. Like a dummy, I had forgotten to charge the batteries in my GPS and didn’t bring it. If nothing else, at least if you have a track log you can easily find you way back where you came from. I was able to use the trail map, a compass, and my partially obscure brain to intuitively find my way. Hopefully these beautiful trails will be repaired at some point in time, but with all the California budget shortfalls, and lacking volunteers, I doubt it will be very soon.
