Hiked the Peter’s creek loop last Saturday and was very pleasantly surprised by the conditions of the trails in Portola. It had been awhile since last hiking the Bear Creek trail, and Peter’s Creek loop, both of which had been in pretty bad shape then. There were numerous tree-falls and badly overgrown sections on Bear Creek, and the Peter’s loop had become very obscure to the point of barely being able to find my way through at all. Even the Slate Creek trail had a few minor problems on the way to the trail camp. I am happy to report now that all of these trails are in very good shape. A huge amount of restoration work has been done to get the park trails back in shape. There were a couple of fresh tree falls on the west side of the Peter’s loop, but they were very minor, and are easily passable. This is great news because Portola is well worth being preserved. This hike is back on my “Nice Hikes” list. (Edited by Randy at 12:01 pm on Dec. 30, 2007)

Seeing those pictures brings back some nice memories of being down there and the hike to get there. It sure is another world. It is somewhat spooky on how alone, and far away from everything you are down there. I don't think I've ever seen a place with the vast amount of Redwood sorrel that carpet the ground down there. I remember going there during past El Nino flood years and all the downed trees. The ranger said it would take a long time for them to get to them due to having severe budget and staff cutbacks. I have one very old picture from down there here: http://groups.msn.com/TomCspictures/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=997 (Edited by Tom C at 9:55 pm on Jan. 1, 2008)

The sense of isolation to be enjoyed on this hike is one of the main attractions for me. I think this comes mainly from topography and it’s effect on one’s bearings. If you study a good map of the area you can see that in the most remote locations, you are actually less than one mile from the paved state park road. You are however isolated by terrain. It is very peaceful, beautiful, and un-crowded.
