If you are planning a trip to Forest of Nisene Marks in Aptos, be advised that the Aptos creek trail is closed. There has been a big slide making the trail impassable. It must have happened last winter, but it's been awhile since I visited there. This is the trail that leads past the site of the 89 quake epicenter. Edited to add another note on the Maple falls trail. This trail has a lot of erosion and storm damage making it quite obscure and somewhat difficult in places. Not impassable, but a lot washouts, debris, and slippery rocks. Wouldn't want to try it in the rainy season. (Edited by Randy at 10:10 pm on Aug. 26, 2007)

Randy, I wish I'd read your post earlier...they used to have signs at the entrance kiosk saying this trail was closed, but they took those signs down so I figured the damage had been repaired. I saw the 'trail closed ahead' sign at the beginning of the Aptos Creek Trail, but at that point I'd already taken so much time to get there that I decided to hike the trail as far as I could go. It looks like the trail was cut into a 3 foot thick layer of dirt that was clinging to a smooth and nearly vertical rock face, and the entire layer of dirt washed away. The trail is high above the creek on a very steep hillside and about 30 feet of trail has been washed out, so there's really no way over or around it. I think the landslide occurred in early 2006 so I doubt it will be repaired any time soon. It doesn't look like they could easily replace the missing section of trail.
