Normally when I see 8 large birds on the ground they are turkeys. That's what I thought these were initially. When I got a little too close they flew up into a nearby tree. It was a little creepy, like something out of a bad movie. Wish I had had my camera with me.

I could see something dead on the ground. I didn't investigate (I was trying to keep my dog away from it) but it looked about the size of a coyote, medium sized dog, or a very small hiker.

I assume they were turkey vultures. The plumage looked black but they were in the shade so I can't be sure. Except for the head they reminded me of giant ravens.
