I wanted to combine an overnight trip to Monterey Peninsula with some kind of day hike in the area. About 5 years ago, my husband & I had walked the 8 mile loop at Andrew Molera State Park. We decided to try it again since I recall that the trail had great views. Well, the views were still great, the weather was absolutely beautiful and sunny 70 degrees, but a good part of the trail is in poor condition. We hiked the River Trail to Hidden trail to Ridge trail and down the Panorama trail. I would say that half the loop was in poor condition. Some parts of the Panorama trail were deeply rutted, so much so that we were hiking in ruts that were waist high on me. The trail collapsed into big holes at many of the gullies that we crossed. Most annoying was how overgrown the some parts of trail were. At one point, it was so thick we couldn't determine which way to walk. I could have used a machete. I am surprised that I didn't get poison oak rash. Many trail signs were also rotted away and laying on the trail. The park now charges $8 entrance to park your car (which I didn't pay since there was no attendant). There isn't much other choice for parking since there are no parking signs along that part of hwy 1. It was sad to see that state of the trail and no doubt, a result of budget cuts. I am scratching this hike from my list just like the loop in Garrapata.
